Christopher Lee plays Dracula

A tribute to Hammer Films’ Dracula

Last Friday was the anniversary of ‘Nosferatu’, first Bram Stoker Dracula’s adaptation to the big screen. Since then, there has been a lot of different versions of the most famous vampire ever created but, for me, there’s something unique when Christopher Lee plays Dracula and Peter Cushing is also there as professor Van Helsing.

Let’s have a look to the 9 classic movies made by Hammer Film productions, also known as Hammer Films or Hammer Pictures:

  • 1958: Dracula / Horror of Dracula (American title), directed by Terence Fisher. With Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Melissa Stribling. Music by James Bernard. Watch the classic movie trailer here.
  • 1960: The Brides of Dracula, directed by Terence Fisher. With Peter Cushing, Martita Hunt, Yvonne Montaur and David Peel. Music by Malcolm Williamson. Watch the classic movie trailer here.
  • 1966: Dracula: Prince of Darkness, directed by Terence Fisher. With Christopher Lee, Barbara Shelley and Andrew Keir. Music by James Bernard. Watch the classic movie trailer here.
  • 1968: Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, directed by Freddie Francis. With Christopher Lee, Rupert Davies and Veronica Carlston. Music by James Bernard.
  • 1970: Taste the Blood of Dracula, directed by Peter Sasdy, With Christopher Lee, Geoffrey Keen and Gwen Watford. Music by James Bernard.
  • 1970: Scars of Dracula, directed by Roy Ward Baker. With Christopher Lee, Dennis Waterman and Jenny Hanley. Music by James Bernard.
  • 1972: Dracula A.D. 1972, directed by Alan Gibson. With Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Stephanie Beacham. Music by Mike Vickers.
  • 1973: The Satanic Rites of Dracula, directed by Alan Gibson. With Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Joanna Lumley. Music by John Cacavas.
  • 1974: The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires, directed by Roy Ward Baker and Cheh Chang. With Peter Cushing, David Chiang and Julie Ege. Music by James Bernard.

There are only two films in this list where Christopher Lee didn’t play Dracula, ‘The Brides of Dracula’ (1960) and ‘The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires’ (1974), which was the last of the list, but still with Peter Cushing as professor Van Helsing.
